MOVIE CHASING MAVERICKS

Santa Cruz is buzzing with excitement about the coming release of the movie "Chasing Mavericks." Even though the movie will be starring a host of great actors such as Gerard Butler, Jonny Weston, and Elisabeth Shue this is only a small part of the anticipation. It is the inspirational true story about the surfing legend Jay Moriarity and his legacy that has both Santa Cruz locals and beyond eager to celebrate the release of Chasing Mavericks. Jay Moriarity was thrust into the spotlight when he was featured on the cover of Surfer at age 16 after taking one of the heaviest Mavericks wipeouts to date. Jay Moriarity went on to earn both the love and respect of so many people before is untimely death freediving in the Maldives.

Mavericks Surfing

                                      MAVERICKS SURFING 2012

In the early 1990s, Mavericks was introduced to the world as one of the largest rideable waves on the planet. Located in Half Moon Bay California, Mavericks breaks one half mile offshore and is surrounded by freezing cold water, great white sharks, huge rocks and a host of other dangers which make Mavericks one of the heaviest surfed waves on the planet. Despite all the dangers, the best local and international big wave surfers converge upon Mavericks each year between November and March to compete and test their skills against Mavericks thundering waves. Being myself a surfer and having lived in Hawaii for over 13 years, I have a great love and respect for big wave surfing. With the current making of the movie "Chasing Mavericks" and with the increasing international eye on Mavericks, 2012 seemed to me the right time to unveil a series of wave paintings entitled "Mavericks."
